3 Ways to Benefit from

Essential Oils

Aromatic use with Essential Oils

Aromatically is the quickest boost to welcome all the benefits that essential oils can give you- and anyone around! Create an oil-haven in seconds around your home, car, or office with these aromatic ways to use essential oils:

  • In a diffuser, 6 dops max (feel free to mix it up and create your own diffuser blends, too!)

  • Place a drop in your hands, rub together, cup your hands and inhale

  • In your car- either by placing a drop on a cotton ball and placing it in your vents or by using a car diffuser

  • Mix a spray bottle of Serenity and water to make a nice linen spray to promote sleep

  • Mix a spray bottle of OnGuard and water to spray the house down to protect from environmental threats and boost immune systems (but for only $6, THESE are handy and we never leave the house without one)

  • Take them on the go and place a drop on your yoga mat to ground you into your practice, or unscrew the lid of Peppermint and smell for an energizing boost before a workout (THIS is a must for me)

Topical use with Essential Oils
Interal use of Essential oils

Due to the molecular composition of essential oils, they are easily absorbed into the skin and can enter the blood stream in less than a minute.

*Using carrier oils to dilute such as coconut oil can help with any skin sensitivity, which is a must when applying oils on babies or when using "hot" oils such as Oregano and OnGuard. doTERRA makes a pre-diluted Touch line that makes topical applications a breeze- especially on the go and it is a "baby must have."

Also remember that *citrus oils are photosensitive, so be sure to either apply them at night, or apply under clothing (avoid sunlight for up to 8 hours).

When in doubt, apply to your feet! Sounds crazy, but our feet actually have the largest pores, which make it an ideal place to apply oils. Think of reflexology and how different spots on your feet correlate to different parts of your body. With babies, this is especially a great way for those little movers and shakers to reap the benefits quickly during a diaper change.

Some ideas to use topically are:

  • One drop in your hand and *directly applied to skin

  • *Using the pre-diluted doTERRA Touch line

  • Added to massage oils for an added bit of relaxation

  • On sore muscles and joints

  • On the back of your neck and up and down your spine

  • Putting Balance on the bottom of your feet to start your day balancing out emotions and hormones

  • Directly on pain centers- for tummy aches apply DigestZen to your abdomen or for bug bites and burns apply Lavender to the area

Taking essential oils internally can be one of the best direct ways to use them!

However, let me remind you of some important things when taking internally:

1. They are perfectly safe for adults, but babies and toddlers should not take internally- if, per chance, they get a hold of a bottle and like all little ones put it in their mouth, rest assured that is okay. The reason we suggest adults only is because our livers are bigger and can fully process the potency of essential oils, whereas babies would only get partial.

2. Only take internally essential oils that have a supplemental fact label on the side of the bottle. These oils are marked so that you know which ones you body can benefit from internal use.

3. Since doTERRA oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) they are the the only essential oils recommended for internal use- this information is not to be transferred to other brands, as the quality is unknown.

4. Internally is also the most controversial mode of application, leading to much debate throughout the essential oil community in recent years. The confusion surrounding internal use of essential oils is largely based on lack of awareness. However, years of past and ongoing research have found that internal usage is safe and is a profoundly efficacious application method.  Less is always more. Always start with one drop. As you become familiar with each essential oil and observe your body's response to it, you can slowly increase the number of drops you take. When essential oils contact the mucosa, they are absorbed to some degree at the initial point of contact, but much of the oil will be continually diluted by the mucous. Rapid absorption and constant dilution allow the oils to have a dramatic yet temporary effect, which explains why any sensation you have in the mouth or throat from essential oils is taken internally is temporary. Because the mucosa is designed to be protective, essential oils can be safely used internally.

Some of the ways myself and my family take oils internally are:

  • Adding 1-2 drops to beverages. I can easily admit I am addicted to San Peligrino with a drop of Lime or Lemon- refreshing and beneficial all around. *Remember: when adding to drinks, always use a stainless steel or glass cup- no plastics (this includes lids)!

  • Dropping what you need in a doTERRA vegie cap and taking

  • Putting a drop directly under your tongue

  • Taking doTERRA Lifelong Vitality Vitamins and other doTERRA supplements

  • Adding them to your favorite recipes
